PEP, PrEP and testing on Koh Samui: answers in plain words
The questions people ask us most, grouped by topic. If yours is not here, a doctor will answer it on WhatsApp at any hour.
PEP
How quickly do I need to start PEP?
Within 72 hours of the exposure, and the sooner the better. The first 24 hours are ideal.
How long is the course?
28 days, one dose every day. Finishing the full course matters as much as starting quickly.
Is PEP 100% effective?
No medicine is, but PEP greatly lowers the chance of HIV when it is started early and taken every day.
I am on Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. What should I do?
If you can reach Chaweng well within 72 hours, come straight here. If not, see the nearest doctor or hospital. Message us and we will help you work out the timing.
What if it has been more than 72 hours?
PEP is not usually started after 72 hours. The doctor can still plan the right tests and talk about PrEP.
PrEP
What is PrEP?
A tablet that prevents HIV before any exposure, taken every day or, for some people, around sex.
Who can use on-demand (2-1-1) PrEP?
It is only proven for anal sex in cisgender men. Everyone else should use daily PrEP.
What tests do I need before starting?
An HIV test and a kidney check. The doctor also checks for hepatitis B before on-demand dosing.
Does PrEP prevent other STIs?
No. It only protects against HIV, so condoms and regular STI testing still matter.
Testing
When will an HIV test give a final answer?
Most infections show by 6 weeks on a 4th-generation test, and 3 months is the standard final check.
How much does STI testing cost?
Packages start at ฿2,500. See the STI testing page for the full list.
How will I get my result?
In person from the doctor, who explains what it means and whether you need a repeat test.
Your visit
Do I need an appointment?
No. The clinic is open 24 hours. Sending a WhatsApp first just helps us be ready.
Where are you?
In Chaweng, a short taxi ride from Samui airport and the Bangrak ferry piers. See directions.
Do I need ID?
A first name is enough to start care. If you want to claim on insurance later, ask for an English receipt and medical summary.
Which languages do you speak?
English and Thai.
