What a test can tell you, depending on when it happened
No test can detect HIV the moment it enters the body. This is roughly how the picture changes over time.
- Under 72 hAsk about PEP firstA test now shows your status before the exposure. PEP is the priority.
- 2 to 6 weeksTest now, repeat laterMany infections show up by now, but a negative is not final yet.
- 6 weeksMost infections detectedA 4th-generation test picks up the large majority by this point.
- 3 monthsThe standard final checkA negative result here is considered conclusive for most people.
Choose just HIV, or test for everything at once
HIV antigen/antibody test
A 4th-generation test that looks for both the virus and your body’s response to it, so it picks up infection earlier than older tests.
HIV with STI screening
Add syphilis, hepatitis B and C and urine tests in the same visit. See the STI packages from ฿2,500.
Tests before PEP or PrEP
A baseline HIV test is part of starting either one, and the doctor adds kidney or hepatitis checks when needed.
Every result comes with a conversation
A negative result means no HIV was found at the time of the test. If your exposure was recent, the doctor will give you a date to test again so you get a final answer.
A reactive result is not a diagnosis on its own. It needs a confirmatory test, and the doctor will explain exactly what happens next, calmly and in private. Modern HIV treatment lets people live long, healthy lives, and once the virus is undetectable it cannot be passed on through sex.
Whatever the result, you leave knowing what it means and what to do next.
HIV testing questions
How soon after sex should I test?
If it was under 72 hours ago, talk to us about PEP first. Otherwise a test from about 2 weeks gives useful information, a test at 6 weeks detects most infections, and a test at 3 months is the standard final check.
Is the test anonymous?
You only need to give a first name or nickname. Results are shared with you, not with anyone else.
Can I get tested at night?
Yes. The clinic is open 24 hours, so you can come in whenever you feel ready.
I tested negative but I am still worried. What now?
Talk it through with the doctor. They will tell you if a repeat test is needed and when, and whether PrEP could take the worry out of the future.
Do you test for other infections too?
Yes. You can add a full STI package in the same visit. See our STI testing page for the options.
